UK Time’s Up calls for support to back Zelda Perkins campaign – Can’t Buy My Silence – as SHE SAID opens on the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women
Time’s Up UK is proud to support Zelda Perkin’s campaign Can’t Buy My Silence which is working to change legislation globally to stop the misuse of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) to buy the silence of victims of sexual misconduct, racism, pregnancy discrimination and other human rights violations. They have had great success in their first year, with new legislation passing into law in Canada and on its way in Ireland and Australia.
Legislators around the world are working with Can’t Buy My Silence to provide protection to all people from abusive NDAs. The campaign has been self-funded until now, but to expand and continue its important work, vital funds are needed.
Time’s Up UK want to spotlight the campaign as SHE SAID, a new Hollywood film directed by Maria Schrader about Jodi Kantor (Zoe Kazan) and Megan Twohey (Carey Mulligan) taking down Harvey Weinstein hits the big screen. SHE SAID features Zelda Perkins, played by Samantha Morton, who was forced to sign an NDA when she worked for Weinstein in the 1990s.

BFI’s Director of Culture and Inclusion, Jen Smith, seconded to take up post as interim CEO to establish new Independent Standards Authority (ISA)
Led by Creative UK and UK Time’s Up, ISA will strengthen efforts to tackle bullying and harassment
Thursday 8th September 2022: BFI’s Director of Culture and Inclusion, Jen Smith, has been seconded to become the interim CEO of the Independent Standards Authority (ISA). A new organisation led by Creative UK and UK Time’s Up, the ISA aims to strengthen efforts to tackle bullying and harassment.
Time’s Up UK has developed the ISA in consultation with the creative industries, led by Caroline Norbury OBE, Chief Executive of Creative UK. It is designed to ensure that people experiencing bullying and harassment whilst working in the creative industries can receive confidential advice, mediation and crucially, investigation into the most serious and complex complaints. Foundations for this work were initiated by the BFI, led by Smith, partnering with BAFTA and UK Time’s Up, to bring the film and television sectors together in 2017 to develop Guidance and Principles to tackle bullying and harassment which were launched the following year.

ITV, Sky, BBC, Channel 4, and Channel 5 first UK broadcasters to back the next stage of proposal for an Independent Standards Authority to strengthen efforts to tackle bullying and harassment
ITV, Sky, BBC, Channel 4 and Channel 5 are the first UK broadcasters to announce their support for the establishment of the proposed new Independent Standards Authority (ISA), committing immediate financial support for the next stage of its development.
The proposals for the ISA, which have been developed by Time’s Up UK in consultation with the creative industries, led by Caroline Norbury OBE, Chief Executive of Creative UK, are designed to ensure that anyone who has suffered abuse, harassment and bullying can receive confidential advice, mediation and crucially, investigation into complaints.
Dame Heather Rabbatts, Chair, Time’s Up UK, said: “It is well known that concerns are often not raised until after Film & TV productions have ceased where broadcasters and production companies no longer have remit to address them. In this grey space many suffer in silence. Nor is there any process, especially where there are multiple allegations. The ISA will conduct expert led investigations where both sides can be heard by an independent panel of skilled investigators working to the highest standards of legal confidentiality.”
Caroline Norbury OBE, Chief Executive, Creative UK, said: “The UK’s creative industries are rightly recognised as a global superpower. It is incumbent on all of us working in the sector to ensure our work practices and culture are of the highest standards. The ISA will be one of the ways we ensure that those who are the most vulnerable in our industry are supported and, that those with the most power to make change, have the tools and infrastructure to facilitate that change”.
The next stage - which the creative industries will fund - is to design the remit, structure and funding arrangements for the ISA.

Creative UK and UK Time’s Up in consultation with creative industries for an Independent Standards Authority to strengthen efforts to tackle bullying and harassment and drive greater accountability across the sector
In the Spring of 2021, singer/songwriter Rebecca Ferguson met with the DCMS to share her experience of bullying, harassment, and discrimination, whilst working in the music industry. Five years on following the exposure of Harvey Weinstein’s toxic behaviour, bullying, harassment, and sexual discrimination continues to be an ongoing problem in the creative industries with stories of bullying, intimidation and abuse of power making headline news.
Since last year many questions were raised about the extent of ongoing harassment in the entertainment sector and what more could be done both to tackle these behaviours together with the need for greater support to the survivors. Now is the time for the creative industries to lead the way in combatting this on-going, bullying, harassment, and endless abuse of power.

Weinstein Trial marks a New Era of Justice
Wednesday 11th March 2020, UK: Today, Harvey Weinstein was sentenced to 23 years in a New York court following his convictions for rape and sexual assault. He now faces further charges in LA and there is an ongoing criminal investigation in the UK.
Today’s landmark sentencing decision is a major moment for the silence breakers and for women battling everywhere for their right to work in a safe workplace without fear of abuse and harassment. It is also a major moment for justice and the system of justice. At its heart is a jury who are charged with deciding who they believe about a criminal act which rarely has forensic evidence nor witnesses. Most rape and assault cases never come to trial because fundamentally women are not believed.
The precedence of this case cannot be underestimated. A group of brave women were listened to and believed. A man who abused his power has faced consequences (and may face further consequences in the months to come). The importance of this case is not that this ends harassment but that it provides a dent in a system which we know from revelations at Fox and CBS Corporation among others, has been systemic in our industry and broader society. This is not a situation of one lone bad wolf.
Dame Heather Rabbatts, Chair, TIME’S UP UK says; “For us at TIME’S UP UK the courage of the silence breakers inspires our work as we focus on how the culture has to change to ensure no one has to say #MeToo again. What this trial shows us is that there is no greater power than a group of women who know their rights. When we work together, we can effect change, change that will shift the power balance and support and give hope to women for years to come.”
Help us continue our work creating the far-reaching changes in every corner of society that will ensure everyone can feel safe at work, at play and at home by donating to the independent Justice & Equality Fund administered by Rosa, the UK Fund for Women and Girls. Together we can end the culture of harassment, abuse and impunity.
